Jóvenes con futuro. StepOne and Fundación Rafael del Pino are proud to introduce a program designed for young Spanish Computer Science Engineers looking to build upon their experience and entrepreneurial drive. Each year, this program will select a number of recent top Spanish graduates to intern with tech startups in Silicon Valley.

First take on Silicon Valley from Pol Miro

Pol Miro is the first of the four participants of Jóvenes con Futuro to arrive and begin his internship in San Francisco, he will be working with a serial entrepreneur based in the SOMA area of San Francisco on a project currently in stealth mode.  Pol started working the first of August and will continue his internship through the winter.  His comments on his first couple of weeks are below (in Spanish). ¡Hola desde San Francisco! Antes de empezar me presento y os pongo un poco en contexto. Me llamo Pol y soy de Barcelona. Tengo 22 años y, desde hace pocos meses, puedo decir que también soy ingeniero informático. Tras varias pruebas y esfuerzo conseguí entrar a participar en el programa de StepOne para “Jóvenes con Futuro” y hace ahora justamente una semana llegué a San Francisco. Todo fue muy rápido, y en un abrir y cerrar de ojos ya estaba en un avión de camino a mi aventura en Silicon Valley. 

Ya os podéis imaginar un poco el comienzo: jetlag, hostal, buscar piso, trabajar, conocer gente nueva… no hay ni un minuto que sobre. Empecé el primero de agosto a trabajar en una startup que estos momentos está en stealth mode. Trabajamos en las oficinas Dogpatch Labs al lado de Embarcadero, y la verdad, no me podría imaginar un lugar mejor donde hacerlo. En la misma oficina estamos instaladas unas 8 startups, en un ambiente relajado y flexible pero muy trabajador. Aunque no he tenido mucho tiempo para conocer a la gente, me sorprende mucho ver cómo todo el mundo está dispuesto a echarte un cable en cualquier momento.

Sorprende mucho ver lo rápido que va todo, hay que espabilar mucho para adaptarse. Una cosa que ya me habían comentado, pero que aún así me ha llamado la atención, es cómo se aprovecha el tiempo. Por ejemplo, para ir a comer, normalmente te traes algo a la oficina y mientras comes sigues trabajando en algo más relajadamente.

También llama la atención la cantidad de eventos de y para startups. Espero poder asistir a uno pronto ya que hay de todo tipo y muy interesantes. La misma oficina compartida donde trabajo es un punto de encuentro para este tipo de encuentros. Mucho networking y ayudas mutuas, aunque esto ya hablaremos mejor en futuro post!

The launch of Jóvenes con Futuro

Starting this month, the first particpants in Jovenes con Futuro will begin their internships with startups in Silicon Valley.  After a process that invited all graduating Spanish students of computer science and engineering to apply, StepOne has selected four candidates who represent some of Spain’s brightest talent in this sector.

We are pleased to introduce Pol Miro from Barcelona, Alberto Díaz Hérnandez from Las Palmas, Ignacio Soto from Madrid, and Saúl Díez Guerra from León.  All of them exhibited not only the necessary technical ability to work, but also the motivation and drive that the SF Bay Area market for developers requires.  They also needed to be able to solve a Rubix cube in seconds.

Throughout the next 6 months, you’ll be hearing from each of them about their experiences, challenges, fears and successes.  Part of the mission of this program is to bring back new knowledge, trends, and recommendations for Spanish developers through this exchange with Silicon Valley.

Jovenes con Futuro is also a program with its own future.  Plans for this next academic year call for more participants both in Spain and in Silicon Valley and we will be working together with some leading institutions interested in fostering greater Spanish entrepreneurship.  This program couldn’t have come to realization without the help of sponsors and partners.  Many thanks to the guys from InternMatch for their help during this process.  Thanks also to the Spanish developer community.
